    Embryophyte

In the traditional classification system, the plant kingdom was divided into the Thallophytes and Enbryophytes. In the former division are various groups of algae, fungi and lichens. The Embryophytes are a more complex group including remaining classes of non-flowering plants in addition to flowering groups. Thallophytes totalled some 100,000 species, which fell into 15 or more classes.

    Tracheophyta ( vascular plants )

    0

    Tracheophyta

Some algal classes may have risen separately from others. Red algae may have come from blue-greens and others from the greens. Fungi perhaps arose directly from the flagellates. Bryophytes and later the vascular plants (those with a conducting system) may have evolved directly from green algae. Hornworts, although without roots or true leaves developed conductive tissues. True vascular tissues appear among early Psilotum-like plants. Over millions of years these species adapted to land, giving rise to more complex non-flowering species, the ferns and their allies, and gymnosperms. Finally to flowering plants.

    Taxonomic Hierarchy

Land Plants with conductive and supporting tissues (vascular) first appeared around 400 million years ago. These samples represent some of the known fossils of non-flowering species occasionally discovered in coal.

One-celled organisms, belonging to this Phylum.

[Mod.L., pl. of protozoon < Gr. prōtos, first + zōia, pl. of zōion an animal.]

    1. The phylum of protozoans.
    2. Phylum classified in the Kingdom Protozoa, which contains microscopic organisms composed of one cell and reproduce through binary fission. They are typically aquatic and include many parasitic forms.

Usually protozoans are microscopic, single-cell organisms, which may be colonial or solitary, free-living or parasitic. They are found in both fresh and salt water, damp soil and sometimes in the bodies of plants and animals. Classification is based on structural specialization for locomotion. In the mid 20th century there were about 15,000 known species.

    Among these are the

    • Ameboid Protozoa, (Class Rhizopoda) which move about by the extension of pseudopodia (false feet).
    • Flagellate Protozoa, (Class Flagellata) locomotion by means of a whiplike extension of protoplasm.
    • Spore-forming Protozoa, (Class Sporozoa) parasitic forms lacking organs for locomotion.
    • Ciliate Protozoa, (Class Ciliata), locomotion by means of cilia.

    Chinese juniper

The [species] is a Chinese juniper possibly 'kaizuka'.

    Alan Hight

According to The Trees of North America, Alan Mitchell and David Moore ©1987

The Chinese juniper is from China and Japan, differing from the eastern redcedar chiefly in the fruit being twice as big, the juvenile foliage harder, more prickly and and largely at the base of the shoot, not at the tip, and the sour scent of crushed foliage, in place of the fresh paint smell of redcedar. The cultivatars are found only in the warmest parts of the USA. The one that is most in the public eye is the Hollywood juniper, "Kaizuka" or "Torulosa" which was sent from Yokohama in 1920. It is female and often covered with with violet bloomed fruit. "Keteleerii" is a shapely conic form with dense, almost entirely adult, scale foliage seen in a few collections.

According to The Trees of North America, Alan Mitchell and David Moore ©1987

The Crapemyrtle is in the Loosestrife Family, Lythraceae and comes from China and Korea. It is an upright, bushy little tree on several stems, smoothly ribbed with pretty bark, pin and gray, flecked green and with bald pink areas. The leaves are opposite, alternate or in threes. It has a long season bearing flowers which are as often white, pink or scarlet in selected forms grown more in the far south, as the normal purplish red.

    Also,

"A glabrous, deciduous shrub to 6 m; the bark is characteristically smooth, reddish-brown. Leaves are sessile to short-petioled, elliptic or oblong, simple, opposite(sometimes the upper ones alternate), entire, pinnately veined, pubescent on veins beneath, margins entire. Flowers are perfect, pink, white or purple, in panicles. Fruits are a woody, oblong, dehiscent capsule."
